Chinese in America in the 1860s Essay - 2750 Words
Chinese in America in the 1860s (Essay Sample) Content: Insert NameInstructorClassSubjectChinese in America 1860'sZhang Wei remembers the day he landed in America very clearly, it was a chilly winter day, and everything including time seems to have frozen. He was anxious to see his father, Zhang Xiuxing who had traveled by sea a year earlier. He was only 16 when his father left and old enough to step into his fatherà ¢Ã¢â ¬s shoes. One year had flown by, and today, he would be leading his mother and his sister to the Promised Land that their father had prepared for them. He was sure that his father would be proud of how he had protected the family in his absence. He could not wait to show him the kind of man he had become. The winter did not dampen Zhang Weià ¢Ã¢â ¬s anticipation; he bore a broad grin on his face. As soon as the big mail ship docked at the port of San Francisco, he knew that his life would never be the same again. His sickly mother did not seem to share the same excitement. She resented the fact that she had left the comfort of her humble home in North Eastern China for America. She was glad about the prospect of seeing her husband but she was not one to share her emotions with her children. Zhang Weià ¢Ã¢â ¬s 12-year-old sister, Jiao, was in constant pain, her freshly re-bound feet made the voyage excruciating for her. Mother had hoped to make her daughter daintier in order to attract a wealth suitor in America. Ironically, Jiao did not look dainty or lovely as her Chinese name suggested. If anything, she looked like a sad, sick young woman with clubbed feet. This fat was lost on her mother who was keen to prepare her daughter for a wealthy suitor the best way she knew how.The voyage from China had been largely uneventful. Zhang Xiuxing has sent word to his family to collect tickets on credit from an employment bureau in the city. The family had boarded a postal ship, which doubled up as the main transportation for immigrants from china. The boarding conditions were deplorab le. Several people died of diarrhea and dehydration. The stench of poverty and despair was thick in the air, but nobody seemed to notice. The determination to stomach the filth in the ship came from the promise of wealth in America. The promise of self-determination, though a strange term for the Chinese, was reason enough for many to leave their homeland for the unknown. As soon as the ship docked, Zhang Wei scanned the port for his father. When he saw him, he could not believe what he saw. The father he knew was only but a shadow of what he used to be. For some reason, he thought his father looked lost in the thick crowd of sojourners at the port. When he waved, he could tell from the reply that his father did not share his excitement. At that moment, Wei realized that it would not matter to his father how well he had taken care of the family in his absence. It took a while for the exhausted group of three to reach where their breadwinner was because Jiao physically weak and could not walk properly. This was the first sign that all was not well in America. Wei missed it because the novelty of his new experience blinded him.The three had arrived in America just before Christmas. The streets were lined with decorated trees and strange lights. Wei was no stranger to lights because he had witnessed many New Year celebrations in China. The Festival of Lights was more pompous and organized than what he saw. He could sense the celebratory mood in the air but he could not understand what the occasion was because according to the Chinese calendar, New Year was several months ahead.Wei did not have much time to take in the scenery because soon enough, they arrived in a part of town that was full of people and Chinese signs. Wei was surprised at how familiar the place felt to him. The architecture of the buildings was strange but the people and the signs were all familiar. For the first time since the beginning of the journey to America, Wei doubted that the originality of his new experience. Chinatown, as he would later learn, was home away from home. Chinese Immigrants lived in these towns where they maintained their culture and lived by its tenets as fiercely as they could (Takaki 12).[See Aarim, Najia] Zhang Xiuxing had immigrated to America to work in the Californian gold mines. He travelled in 1960 just before the beginning of the civil war. What he did not know was that the gold rush had ended decades earlier. On arrival, Xiuxing struggled to cope with dashed golden dreams together with the cultural shock. He did not understand the clamor for the end of slavery. As far as he was concerned, it was an honor to be of service to your master. He was further puzzled by the calls for secession by the confederate states and their incessant disobedience of the president. This was unheard of in his country; the word of the emperor was final. No sane man would dare stand up to him, let alone question his directives.Fortunately, for Xiuxing, he secured another job as a cook at a wealthy Chinese immigrantà ¢Ã¢â ¬s restaurant. He worked there for 8 months before he settled down. He avoided going into San Francisco because he found the city streets to be very confusing. In the 9th month of his stay, he was luck to be drafted as one of the men who would be working on the railway line. He expected to make up to $ 35 per month from his new job. Since he would be travelling with the railway works, he needed his family to come and take care of the little he had amassed in his humble home in Chinatown. Unknown to his family, Mr. Zhang Xiuxing had decided that he would stay in America and pursue the American dream as far as it would take him.The construction of the Central Pacific Railroad meant that Weià ¢Ã¢â ¬s father was never home. He was among the estimated 10,000 Chinese men who took part in the construction of the railroad (Henderson, and Olasiji 22). The men who were left in china town were stable immigrants who owed shops, r estaurants and laundry shops. There were very few women in the community; those that could be seen on the streets were the wives of the wealthy merchants. Weià ¢Ã¢â ¬s mother got a job as the cook and personal minder of one of the wealthy shop -ownerà ¢Ã¢â ¬s wives. She was not happy because she felt lost in a strange country. Wei realized this from the way she reprimanded him whenever she caught him with English publications. Weià ¢Ã¢â ¬s mother was also frustrated by the fact that none of the wealthy men in the town had shown any interest in Jiao who she had meticulously prepared for marriage by a wealthy man. According to the American dream, men were expected to work harder to fend for their families while the women conducted household chores and bring up the children. From a social perspective, it represented a period of loneliness to many housewives because their men were constantly absent from their homes in pursuit of the means to take them closer to the American dre am. The women were left with the responsibility of raising the kids on their own.[See Henderson, George and Olasiji, Thompson. Migrants, Immigrants, and Slaves: Racial and Ethnic Groups in America. University Press of America, 1995. Print] Jiao had the most difficult experience during the beginning of their stay in America. She was only 12, and therefore unaware of the disadvantage that her bound feet subjected her to. Her mother could not continue with the binding process because she could not get the correct materials in the Chinese shops. The shape of her feet was already deformed but not quite to the acceptable standard of feet binding. She could not leave the house because her mother told her that she was not yet ready for her suitor. This was a blatant lie because there was no suitor. The immigrant businesspersons had families back in china and were not keen to re-marry in America. Besides, foot binding was considered a strange practice in America where the value of an immigra nt woman was in her ability to contribute to the family income; in the very least, she was expected to perform all household chores, which Jiao could not do in her current physical state.Life in china town was deplorable but familiar. Poverty levels were high, the houses were barely habitable, and crime was rampant. Chinese immigrants were happy in these secluded settlements. They could not afford to complain because they were free to work their way out of poverty. In China, the communist regime did not allow individual prosperity. All means of production were owed by the state, worked for the state in return for only what they need for sustenance. The capitalist system practiced in America allowed everybody to work hard and amass as much wealth as they could. The allure of the American dream engrossed many of the immigrants. They worked long and hard and lived frugally. So despite the poor conditions of china town, many Chinese immigrants only saw as the preparation ground for a mo re prosperous future.Zhang Xiuxing had a grand plan for the achievement of his version of the American dream. He determined that by saving $20 every month from his railway salary, he would be able to return to Chinatown with a substantial capital to start his own shop. He had already decided that his son would work as an apprentice in one of the many shops in china town. He expected his son to learn the secrets of the trade and share them with his father when he returned from his work. Before Mr. Xiuxing left for the railroads in 1863, he had committed his son to Mr. John Lià ¢Ã¢â ¬s shop. Wei was to work for $18 a month for 2 years. He would be under the command of his new master until his father returned from work. Wei was not consulted despite being 18 years at the time. According to Confucian teachings, children should not upset their parents by disobeying them. Wei had no choice but to shelve his dreams of learning English. In 1863, President A...

Brain Imaging Techniques Used Today - 1645 Words
Brain Imaging Techniques Duane Perrin Eastern Oregon University 11/11/2016 Since the beginning of time people have been trying to understand what is going on inside our heads. With the development and continuous advancement of brain imaging techniques it has become possible to do just that. It is now possible to produce both structural and functional images of the brain. While brain imaging techniques have advanced significantly throughout history and proven extremely useful, they still have their limitations. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief history of brain imaging developments, explain the major brain imaging techniques being used today, and provide information about what each scan can and canââ¬â¢t tell us about the human mind and brain. A brief history of brain imaging as described by Raichle (2009) begins with the introduction of computerized tomography (CT) in the early 1970s and development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shortly thereafter, which prompted the invent and use of positron emission tomography (PET), and then functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) which came in the 1990s (p.119). Since then other forms of brain scanning technology have appeared such as the Magnetoencephalography (MEG) scan, and other variations of PET and MRI such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The appearance of these types of brain imaging techniques has provided great insight into the structure and function of the human mind. Computer Vision And Pattern In Recognition -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Computer Vision And Pattern In Recognition? Answer: Introduction The idea related to artificial intelligence and robotics is ability to recognize images, objects, patterns and sequences. This idea is related to artificial intelligence because nowadays there is a major requirement of machines to recognize images and patterns (Forbes.com 2017). The concept is that AI is not well acquainted with the background knowledge of the world hence they are not able to analyze between relevant and irrelevant information. This concept will be very useful for analyzing real world objects such as recognizing objects to develop models. The reason is that nowadays industry wants machines to do their work due to efficiency of technology. This concept will also help to analyze the problems through visual data (Johnson et al. 2017). Nowadays, visual data is used by many industries. The industries develop models which needs analyzing of visual data and recognition of objects and patterns. This is the area where the above idea will provide benefit and solution. References Forbes.com. 2017.Forbes Welcome. Working Place Monitoring Essays
Working Place Monitoring Essays Working Place Monitoring Essay Working Place Monitoring Essay Humans are naturally egocentric.à We tend to always look out for the welfare of our personal interests.à We tend to judge what is ethically right based on what is beneficial to us. To us, we are always the good guys and those who oppose us are the villains. We see our own actions to always be the right thing to do. However, this egocentric mindset is what blinds us from making truly ethical reasoning and judgments. Introspection is a necessary ability for being ethically reasonable. Aside from seeing only what is beneficial to us, we need to learn to see things from the perspective of the other. We need be able to reflect on our own actions and see how this will affect the other person, as well as everything and everyone else involved. We should also learn to consider what would be beneficial for them, and if that thing is unacceptable for you personally, then learn to make compromises so that your decision would be something that will benefit you both. ââ¬Å"We can learn to respect the rights of others and not simply focus on fulfilling our desires. The main problem is not so much distinguishing between helping and harming, but our natural propensity to be focused almost exclusively on ourselves and those closely connected with us.â⬠(Paul and Elder 3) As for the case of workplace monitoring, we cannot avoid companies from making such policies. This is their way of looking out for the best of their interests. For the employees, getting offended by such company policies is their way of looking out for their own. Now to harbor good ethics in the workplace, both parties should learn to be sensitive to the needs and personal restrictions of each other. The employee should understand that a company has a basis for adapting such policies; that maybe it is their way of maintaining the smooth flow of their system. However, the company should also understand that their employees also have certain personal restrictions and needs that should be respected. Workplace searches, urine tests, etc, are necessary for the company to know their employees and to ensure that their employees are of the character that they expect them to be. If the employees have no skeletons to hide in their closets, they should not have problems with these policies at a ll. But the company should know their restrictions and not get offensively close to the personal lives of their employees such as when monitoring phone calls. Just learn to respect the needs of both parties, true ethical judgment can arise from that. Bayer, Richard C. Ethical Reasoning in Business. An Analysis of Walt Whitmans Song of Myself
Analysis of Walt Whitman's My Own Song Whitman is always asking questions. He believes the purpose and cause of life is a mystery. He is surrounded by people who draw a line between good and evil and refuses what is not a holy direct vote in the universe. Unlike modern people, Whitman encompasses everything. His mystical perception of the world has caused the idea that God can be found in all and he can never be fully understood. Walt Whitman's article on My Own Song explains Walt Whitman's My Own Song about Julia Kristeva's Fallen Theory. The importance of corruption This negative, imminent and unpleasant thing arises from Whitman's view of rebuilding the concept of sublime material that can cause sublime moments. - From time to time, humans must ask questions: what constitutes actions and determines the type of interaction that we show around others? My own commentary is the way the modern world doubts the value of the facade. The novel also doubts what we know as insignificant lik e seeing the cat we are sleeping on our stomach and looking at the clouds in the sky It was. Unlike modern people, Whitman encompasses everything. - Walt Whitman is considered to be the most important American democratic poet of his time. Not only does he accept it completely, I believe America's democracy is not just a political regime but a lifestyle (Casale 48). Many of his personal experiences influenced his deep democratic views (48). As a volunteer at a military hospital during the American Civil War he saw a lot of death and thanked the opportunity offered by the US government more and more (Mirsky)

Electromagnetic Energy Storage Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Electromagnetic Energy Storage - Research Paper Example Electromagnetic field influences the behavior of objects in the vicinity of an electromagnetic field. The Electromagnetic waves that carry electromagnetic energy is a family of waves based on the frequency and wavelength (Tom and Heather 34). Arranged in order of increasing frequency then we have Gamma rays, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, Visible light, Microwaves Infrared, and Radio waves. Gamma rays have the highest frequency hence a high energy while the Radio waves have the lowest frequency and therefore have less energy. Electromagnetic energy can be stored in electrical devices such as the capacitors and Inductors. For an electric field, the total energy density which is given by energy stored per unit volume can be determined to be . Where the symbols assume their scientific meaning, this relation is useful in the evaluation of the total energy stored in a capacitor. An inductor is a coil of electrical wire with parameters that enable it to store energy in the form of the magnetic field (David, 1989). The magnetic field energy density is given by. This energy density is useful in the determination of energy stored in the Inductor. Both the electric and magnetic fields play important roles in energy transport as described by the pointing vector (Mats and Jonsson 23). It is however important to notice that the energy associated with magnetic and electric fields is equal and therefore the use of one the equation above can be used to represent the other. It is also important to realize that for an ele ctromagnetic wave with particular energy, the electric field is directly proportional to the energy of ââ¬Å"the magnetic field with a constant of proportionality equal to the speed of lightâ⬠(Mats and Jonsson 30) ââ¬Å"According to Faradays law, a changing magnetic fieldâ⬠(Chegg 31) such as a magnet moving inside a conducting

People and Organizations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
People and Organizations - Essay Example Assembly lines were dedicated to the production of a single thing, implying the development of dedicated machine tools and workers, operating individually rather than as a work team, were responsible for the performance of single tasks within the assembly process. The implication here is that the said philosophy is funding upon the division of a single project/process into its constituent elements and the total dedication of man and machine to the efficient and timely execution of those single tasks. The Fordist production system, as defined in the above, reduced the cost of automobile manufacturing by 90% and led to the evolution of mass production and the associate mass consumption, and consumer culture. Although incontrovertibly efficient, however, it was not flexible and led to the accumulation of significant inventories. This, however, does not imply that the Fordist system has passed out of existence since several of its elements have been integrated into contemporary organizations and management systems. These elements are lack of specialization, as in workers and employees being able to fulfill a number of tasks if and when required, control over the business processes, efficiency predicated on the division of single projects into its constituent parts, calculability, predictability and, importantly, the organization as an efficient machine. In the final analysis, therefore, while the Fordist system of production may have been replaced by others more compatible with current requirements and realities, its philosophical elements have survived and have been integrated into organizational management. II Despite their positive impact upon production and their contribution to the evolution of more efficient and effective organizations, Taylorism and Scientific Management were, as a result of the controversy they inspired, replaced by the human relations approach to management. Following a brief overview of both, the differences between the two approaches shall be elucidated. Scientific management adopts an objective, rational approach to organizational management, such as which decentralizes socio-cultural and human factors and considerations. This approach advocates the division of labor in the production process for the attainment of maximum productivity, even as it insists upon the separation of the physical from the mental tasks. The aforementioned practices are predicated on the belief that the work process is measurable, in that the componential elements of a single process can be quantified, just as the steps involved in the completion of each can be measured. The implication here is that through the rational quantification of work process steps, the calculation of the time it tales to complete each, the work process can evolve into a semi-automatic and highly efficient phenomenon. Scientific management, as may have been determined from the preceding, marginalizes the human factor, to the extent of rendering the work process an unthinking and routinised one wherein workers are isolated one from the other. Its focus on the rational, leading to its failure to acknowledge the human factor was a source of criticism and controversy. More importantly,

When a Flower Blossoms :: essays research papers
When a Flower Blossoms à à à à à William Shakespeare addresses the question of identity in The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark through the characters of Hamlet and Ophelia. Although the play is centered on Hamletââ¬â¢s struggle for identity, a more important issue is addressed through Opheliasââ¬â¢ struggle. She is ignored and left alone to find the truth about what it means to become a woman, while Hamlet receives constant concern while struggling with his identity issues as an adult. Her struggle of identity may be similar to his, but it is different in that she is not a man, but an adolescent girl who lives in a society that revolves around men. The dysfunction of her family, deterioration of her intimate relationship, ultimate death of her father, and absence of a mother figure worsen her internal struggles. She is an adolescent facing the internal conflicts of acceptance, identity, and self-worth, which commonly plague pubescent girls. Puberty for a young girl is perhaps the most difficult time of life, and is often misunderstood by adults. In society, men receive more concern than women do as they struggle to adulthood, which is demonstrated through the character of Hamlet. Adolescent girls often feel confused about their bodies and identity in that they are becoming different from boys for the first time. In Opheliaââ¬â¢s case, she is left completely alone to figure out what is happening to her body and to understand her emotions. If Ophelia were a man or a pubescent boy struggling with identity as is seen in Hamlet throughout the play, she possibly would have survived these tragic situations. à à à à à The most devastating moment for her was when Hamlet no longer appeared to be her safe haven. She thought that she could trust him and some how he would help her get through her confusion of adolescence, and therefore, make her way to adulthood. She proves her naivete in the way she reacts to him when he attacks her in her room and she does not fight back, but instead runs to her father, Polonius, for comfort and safety. His motives as a father are not what they need to be to help her understand what has just happened to her. Instead of comforting or explaining to her what has happened, he feels that he needs to defend the idea of her being a whore, and more importantly his ability to raise an upstanding young woman.

Does age matters in relationship? Essay
ââ¬Å"Age is a Matter of Mind ââ¬â if you donââ¬â¢t Mind, it doesnââ¬â¢t Matter.â⬠but the The Bible says not to be ââ¬Å"unequally yokedâ⬠(weird way to put itâ⬠¦ anyway) It is entirely your choice whether you decide to date someone considerably older or younger than yourself. To some age isnââ¬â¢t a significant factor in dating, while others have a strong opinion and will only date people the same age or within a few years of their age. It is a personal choice. There are no rules to say you shouldnââ¬â¢t date someone much older or younger than yourself, but be prepared for possible judgment from others if there is a considerable age gap. Of course, even if the age difference is there, you have to look at what you both enjoy. Do you have common interests and desires? If so, then an age difference of any size can potentially be overcome. Thereââ¬â¢s certainly no sense in throwing away a chance at happiness just because of a number. Itââ¬â¢s just a good thing to be aware of, in case some difference should arise. But if two people are committed to making something work, it can, in spite of any obstacles that might come up. Both of you need to be sure that ââ¬Å"Both are in Agreement and on the same Page?â⬠But when there is a large age gap, this is when a relationship can face difficulties. With an age gap there is always going to be lifestyle differences. A younger person may enjoy nights out with their younger friends and have no interest in starting a serious relationship, whereas, their older partner might be at an age where they want to settle down and spend quiet time alone with them. However, if one person involved lies about what they want from the relationship then this can cause big problems further down the line. If you want a serious relationship, but the person you are dating only wants a casual one, then you need to think long and hard about whether they are worth sacrificing your dreams for. There are in fact many upsides to age differences in relationships that can have an extremely positive impact. The younger partner has the potential to extract energy and spark from the older partner. Equally as beneficial, an older lover can provide emotional stability and offer guidance with life choices. However social situations with family and friends can be challenging. Despite these potential problem areas, many relationships with an age gap are highly successful. The key is honesty and communication. Being open and truthful from the start about what you are looking for in a relationship, and even life, is the best way to ensure you are able to achieve this. If both partners are in agreement, then there is no issue. Like with any relationship, if you are happy, have a strong bond and are committed to making it work, then together you can cope with any complication life throws in your direction. Levels of Maturity ââ¬â Immature individuals tend to be funnier and more exciting to be around, but when it comes to the important things ââ¬â sometimes you can be left disappointed. Sometimes, different levels of maturity can be the deciding factor between your relationship making it or breaking under the pressure. Warning! If heââ¬â¢s still single/divorced after all these years, there must be a reason? Yes, he may not have found ââ¬Å"the right oneâ⬠yet, but seriously ââ¬â why is he still single/divorced? Commitment-phobic? Emotionally stunted? Self Centered? You might want to check out his collection of baggage before you travel any further on this journey with him. Good Luck!

The Golden Age Of Islamic Thought And Its Cultural Impact...
Growing up I always wondered what was going on before the year 2,000. What about year 1,000? I had learned as far back as the 1700s but I still had not found what I really wanted to know. When I did the reading for ââ¬Å"The Golden Age of Islamic Thought and Its Cultural Impact on Europeâ⬠my question was finally answered. During the ââ¬Å"Dark Agesâ⬠Europe was at its all time low in allowance of intellectual thinking. The sad thing being people were really dictating the way you think! While this was happening Islam was thriving in more ways than one in the 1,000s I had always wondered about. Although Islam has clearly had a significant influence on Europe, Europeans denied this fact, their invents, thoughts, and ideas even being seemingly relevant all while their society was highly influenced by said denied facts. The historians and philosophers from Europe have denied Islam the credit that it really deserves for the development of modern culture. One thing that is stupidly ignored is their impact on mathematics. In todayââ¬â¢s modern word there is more math than you could ever imagine, very difficult math at that. None of this would have truly been possible if it wasnââ¬â¢t for Islamââ¬â¢s contributions but Europe will always turn their heads to this fact. The common European ego is too large to simply give credit where credit is due (Something that Islam never had a problem doing).
